Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare an 8-inch rectangular dish by greasing it.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together applesauce, milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and grated carrots until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and gently fold until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish evenly.
  6. In another bowl, mix granulated sugar, brown sugar, and chopped nuts, then sprinkle this over the batter.
  7. Carefully pour very hot water over the mixture; do not stir.
  8. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Allow to cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
  10. Serve warm with a scoop of cheesecake ice cream or whipped cream.
