Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Cut the onion into bite-sized pieces and separate the layers.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  3. In another bowl, pour the buttermilk.
  4. Place the breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  5. Dip each onion piece into the buttermilk, then coat it in the flour mixture, back into the buttermilk, and finally roll it in the breadcrumbs until fully coated.
  6. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot over medium heat until it reaches 350°F.
  7. Carefully add the coated onion pieces in batches, frying for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove the fried onions with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, try baking the coated onion pieces at 400°F for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • For added flavor, mix grated Parmesan cheese into the breadcrumb mixture or experiment with different spices like Italian seasoning or chili powder.
